It's time to start the New Year with a healthy diet using easy and nutritious tips! Learn 6 simple healthy eating tips you can use today.
Plan Your Meals Ahead of Time
Planning in advance is one of the easiest ways to maintain a healthy diet. Try making a shopping list before you head out to the supermarket. Train yourself to stick to your list, that way you are only buying ingredients you need and won't have any wasted food.
You can also meal plan for the week, then you know exactly what dishes you'll be preparing each day and don't risk falling into an unhealthy eating pattern just because you haven't got anything in the fridge.
Eat Plenty of Fruits & Vegetables
Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables every day is a great way to provide your body with important vitamins, minerals and phytonutritents for optimal health. As a minimum aim for 5 servings daily, with more veg than fruit - try 3 portions of veg and two of fruit. You might think you are a long way from that goal plan when you will eat eat portion. This might work for you - a piece of fruit as part of breakfast and a second one as a snack or to replace a sugary dessert, then add one veg to lunch and two at dinner time and you're done!
Choose Healthy Carbs and Fats
It's important to choose healthy carbs and fats that will provide your body with energy. Healthy carbs include whole grains, such as brown rice, quinoa, and oats. Healthy fats include avocado, nuts, seeds and fatty fish like salmon. Eating a balanced mix of these foods will keep your energy levels up and provide essential nutrients for overall health.
Drink Enough Water
Drinking water is essential for your health, and can help you stay energized and focused throughout the day. Drink enough of it - at least eight glasses a day - and don’t wait until you are thirsty. Choose herbal, green or black tea, coffee or sparkling water if you need an alternative. Just watch you don't get too much caffeine.
Watch How Much You Eat
Be mindful of portion sizes: Pay attention to portion sizes and try to eat only until you are satisfied, rather than stuffed. You can do this my chewing more slowly and focusing on eating without distractions. Using smaller plates and bowls can also help you control portion sizes.
Buy Ready-to-Go Healthy Snacks for Busy Days
New Year resolutions are all about making healthier habits, but with busy lives it can be hard to stay motivated without planning ahead. It's important to make sure you have healthy snacks available when you're on the go. Ready-to-eat vegetables and fruits like apples, carrots, celery, cucumbers and cherry tomatoes are great for snacking. You can also pre-pack other healthy options such as pumpkin seeds, nuts like almonds or walnuts - this will help you to stay energized and on track with your goals.
